About ASVI Edmonton |
|
ASVI — Alberta Society for the Visually Impaired was established in 1971, when a group of parents of blind and visually impaired children came together to advocate for the return of their children from out of province residential schools. Since then, the organization has been active in advocating for appropriate resources in the classrooms of neighborhood schools. We have also worked at providing recreational opportunities for children, learning opportunities for parents and professionals, assistive technologies for children and a myriad of other activities. Today, our children continue to struggle in school to have their basic education needs met, including: · Accessing suitable devices for writing · Accessing dictionaries · Accessing qualified teachers of the visually impaired · Accessing orientation and mobility instruction, including can instruction, that will ensure safe and independent travel · Accessing quality produced Braille and large print materials in a timely manner We ask that you take action on the fundamental educational needs of Alberta’s blind and visually impaired students. Set a clear direction for our children to become successful, independent and contributing members of society. We are confident that by working together, Alberta can become a leader in this field, a resource and a model for other provinces to emulate. |
